![]() The UK is forecast to grow faster than any other G7 economy this year, with employment at record highs, but with productivity growth weaker than forecast. It reduces the deficit, achieves a surplus and makes the reforms needed so Britain is fit for the future. It takes the next bold steps in the government’s long-term economic plan. In uncertain times and against a deteriorating global economic outlook, this Budget delivers security for working people. This chart shows where $5.2 trillion in mandatory spending went in 2020.This is a Budget that puts the next generation first. The ability to quickly ramp up spending enabled the government to help people who lost jobs, those who got sick, and many others. This led to mandatory spending of $5.2 trillion, much higher than in previous years. In 2020, most pandemic relief fell under mandatory spending programs. Mandatory spending makes up roughly two-thirds of the total federal budget in most years, and more in some years. ![]() Unlike discretionary programs, the money didn’t run out and shut some people out. During the COVID-19 crisis, for example, anyone who qualified for stimulus checks could get them. One advantage of this kind of spending compared to discretionary spending (which is limited by the amounts Congress sets) is that it can more readily respond to unexpected circumstances like a recession, or a pandemic. Medicare and other programs work similarly. People who are eligible can get help, and the government covers the costs. When Congress decides to create a program like Social Security, rather than setting aside a certain amount of money, it sets rules for who can receive benefits from the program, and what those benefits will be. ![]() It also includes Medicaid, the health insurance program for low-income adults and children, and widely used safety net programs like food stamps (SNAP), welfare (TANF), and highway construction and maintenance, and other things. It is dominated by the Social Security and Medicare programs, which provide income security and health insurance for retirees and some Americans with disabilities, and sometimes their families. Mandatory spending is also legislated by Congress, often for multiple years at a time. Other examples of discretionary spending include the early childhood education program Head Start (included in Housing & Community), public housing and homeless programs (Housing & Community), federal aid for public K-12 education (Education), Pell grants for low-income college students (Education), food assistance for Women, Infants and Children (or WIC, in Food and Agriculture), job training and placement for unemployed people (in Social Security, Unemployment and Labor), and scientific research through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF), among many others. In 2020, because some discretionary spending passed through supplemental appropriations went to pandemic programs, the share of the discretionary budget that went to the military was smaller – even though the amount that went to the military was just as high as in previous years. In most years, this accounts for more than half of the discretionary budget. The pie chart shows federal spending in 2020 broken into these three categories.īy far, the biggest category of discretionary spending is spending on the Pentagon and military. Interest payments on the national debt account for a much smaller amount than the other two categories. Together, mandatory and discretionary spending account for more than ninety percent of all federal spending, and pay for all of the government services and programs on which we rely. Treasury divides all federal spending into three groups: mandatory spending, discretionary spending and interest on debt. So where does all that money go? Three Types of Federal Spending The extinction of Ice Age animals like the wooly mammoth and saber-toothed tiger was only about 13,000 years ago, or less than half a trillion seconds. ![]() In 2020, the total federal budget ran much higher, at $7 trillion, because of all of the steps the government took to address the COVID-19 pandemic.īecause few of us have any idea what a trillion really is, here’s one example: 1 trillion seconds is about 31,000 years. The total federal budget of the United States has recently run about $4 trillion or more each year. Federal Spending: Where Does the Money Go Federal Budget 101

I'm not knocking the activity, it was fun, but the person teaching it was not a good teacher, and since that is part of what you are paying for I would suggest that this establishment ensures that whoever is the lead painter actually know how to teach the steps to the students, as well as recognize when they need help. In fact several women who were taking a private class in another room came out to take a group photo and all of their paintings looked great and they all seemed very happy and positive. The entire experience was very frustrating, as this is currently a popular activity and on a regular basis you see people posting awesome pictures they have created. At one point his co-worker (who was very very nice, and walked around the class trying to help all of us as best as she could) provided him with a microphone, but apparently it did not work. In this case this was not a full class, so it was not very loud as mentioned by another reviewer. He would stand in front of his painting so we couldn't see what he was doing, he wouldn't explain very well OR loud enough OR at all. The first 20 minutes he was ok, but after that he was just lousy. However the lead painter was a TERRIBLE teacher. Honestly I could have lived with those things. At one point the lead painter mentioned that she should not be sitting there, but at no point asked her to change seats. There were multiple tables around the room she could have sat in. Several members of our group were either at separate tables and/or could not see very well due to this person doing their own thing in a spot that really should have gone to someone involved in the current project. Second, there was a large girl sitting in a prime spot up front, but was not even doing the same painting as the rest of us. My first issue with this place was that they had us at these tiny little tables with barely enough room for the supplies, never mind an extra drink or plate of food. We were greeted immediately and offered smocks, shown to where we would sit, and advised that drinks and food could be ordered at the bar area. It is advisable to call ahead or check online to confirm hours and prices. My girlfriend came up with the idea to do this one night and we were all pretty psyched to have fun. The pictures posted are from our experience at the White Plains Muse Paintbar. Everyone had their own way of doing it and some people added additional details. Interestingly enough, no two paintings came out alike. No matter the age and skill everyone enjoyed painting the same picture. It was an extremely fun and fulfilling two hours of creating our masterpiece. While painting, many people enjoy food and drinks from the restaurant and bar. There was an additional artist going around helping anyone that needed assistance. Our instructor, Mervis was entertaining and fun. The artist giving instruction on the stage explains all the equipment and shows everyone what to do, step by step. If you come with a few friends or family members you get placed near each other at the same table. No painting experience is necessary to join and enjoy a paint class.
